GPU Mining
Mining● Common

Using graphics processing units to mine Bitcoin, prevalent from 2010-2013 before ASIC dominance. GPUs offered significant speedup over CPUs due to parallel processing. Now obsolete for Bitcoin as ASICs are millions of times more efficient.

Technical Notes

Era: late 2010 - early 2013. GPUs: 10-100 MH/s. Replaced by FPGAs briefly, then ASICs (2013). Modern ASICs: 100+ TH/s (million× faster). Some altcoins use 'ASIC-resistant' algorithms favoring GPUs. Bitcoin's SHA256 heavily optimized for ASICs.
