Race Attack
Security● Common

A double-spend attempt against zero-confirmation transactions by broadcasting two conflicting transactions simultaneously—one to the merchant, one to miners. Relies on the merchant's transaction not reaching miners first.

Technical Notes

No mining required, but unreliable. Factors: network topology, first-seen rule (mostly deprecated), RBF signaling. Defense: wait for confirmations, connect to many nodes, detect double-spend attempts. Full RBF makes zero-conf even less safe.
