A layer 2 payment protocol enabling instant, low-fee Bitcoin transactions through a network of bidirectional payment channels. Payments route through multiple channels using HTLCs. Only channel open/close transactions are recorded on-chain.
Technical Notes
Capacity: ~5000 BTC in public channels. Uses HTLCs for trustless routing: hash preimage reveals atomically or times out. Onion routing hides payment path. BOLT specifications. Implementations: LND, CLN, Eclair, LDK. Watchtowers monitor for channel breaches.
