A trustless exchange of cryptocurrencies between different blockchains without intermediaries. Uses hash time-locked contracts (HTLCs) to ensure either both parties complete the trade or neither does. Enables decentralized cross-chain trading.
Technical Notes
Process: Alice locks BTC with hash(secret), Bob locks altcoin with same hash, Alice claims altcoin (reveals secret), Bob uses secret to claim BTC. Timeout ensures refund if trade fails. Requires compatible scripting (timelocks, hashlocks). Lightning enables faster atomic swaps.
